GOLD    exhibition 14.3. - 17.6. 2012 Belvedere Vienna

The Shield of Apollo (333 cm)

A symbol of Sun and light.

Just as the Sun itself was perceived in the ancient world as the giver of light, Apollo as the representative of the Sun was perceived as the giver of inner light.

Gnothi seauton = Nosce te ipsum = "Know thyself!"

"Know thyself" was the dictum carved in stone at his shrine at Delphi, and this emphasises the importance of Apollo as a symbol of consciousness.

The shield is a mirror with many facettes in which light reflects on gold and sets the waves in motion. The Methaphor demands of us to perceive many facettes of our being so that we at last know ourself to become who we are.
